It is a widely held belief that the world of music is divided into two major realms: mainstream music—simple, widely consumed, destined to fade into oblivion after the initial excitement—and niche music—deeper, more refined, and complex, followed by a smaller, more select audience. Having always had a cross-cutting perspective on what is considered classical and what is pop, what is "commercial" and what is "high-quality," I have never seriously concerned myself with this distinction. When I started working on soundtracks for serial productions, I never felt the need to simplify my musical approach just to cater to an audience often described as less discerning.
The boundary between mainstream and underground is unstable and can be radically redefined over time. How, for example, should we classify Nirvana, Metallica, Mumford & Sons, or Bon Iver? These are artists and bands that emerged from alternative scenes and went on to pioneer new musical trends. And what about the psychedelic, sophisticated, and complex Pink Floyd? Can we truly exclude them from the mainstream category?
These reflections have always led me to approach musical projects with a certain boldness, disregarding genre conventions and the so-called “audience expectations.” I believe that nothing stifles creativity more than this invisible logic, which ultimately standardizes and flattens artistic expression. On the contrary, I strongly believe in the independence of both creators and listeners, convinced that there is a profound desire for new sounds and authentic voices.
Mare Fuori 5 represents, for me, the confirmation of a renewed perception of the audience: a vision of the listener as free, open, intelligent—exactly how everyone should be regarded. This perspective also serves as both nourishment and an incentive for a visionary, creative, and revitalized music industry.
The music of Mare Fuori 5 is slow, subtle; it moves forward gently, defying trends and steering away from the patterns of teen music. This music seeks to reach an unknown space, where each person can find their own frequency. It is the audience of Mare Fuori that has made this revitalization possible, transforming something deeply independent into the mainstream and granting me the privilege of engaging on this level of artistic dialogue.
